UK Government Publishes Final Delivery Plan to Transform ME/CFS Care and Research
On 22 July 2025, the UK Government released its Final Delivery Plan for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), marking a significant milestone in improving care, support, and research for the estimated 390,000 people affected by the condition in the UK
The plan, developed collaboratively with patients, carers, healthcare professionals, researchers, and charities, focuses on three core themes:
- Research:
- Aims to build a well-funded, inclusive research environment.
- Includes new investments such as:
- £845,000 for the PRIME infrastructure project.
- £1.4 million for the HERITAGE study on healthcare models.
- A new NIHR award to explore repurposed pharmaceutical treatments 2.
- Attitudes and Education:
- Introduces new NHS training modules to improve awareness and reduce stigma.
- Emphasizes the importance of lived experience in shaping education and policy 3.
- Living with ME/CFS:
- Enhances support for children, young people, and adults.
- Expands access to care through community-based services.
- Addresses employment challenges and benefit assessments 3.
The plan includes SMART actions (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) with clear ownership, timelines, and indicators of success. It builds on the interim delivery plan and public consultation, which received over 3,000 responses
Minister for Public Health and Prevention, Ashley Dalton, emphasized that this is not the end but the beginning of a long-term commitment to improving lives, with accountability and collaboration at its core
