MCS Summer 2025 – Summary
This update from Kathy’s MCS/ES Helpline highlights major international progress and practical advice for people affected by Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and Fragrance Sensitivity.
🌐 International Developments
- UN Recognition: MCS was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2025, thanks to advocacy by Canadian organisations.
- Global Conference: The first International MCS Conference focused on scientific legitimacy, diagnosis, treatment, and policy change.
- Advocacy Goals: Integration of MCS into public policy, healthcare, housing, employment, and accessibility standards.
🧴 Understanding Fragrance Sensitivity
- Fragrance is a common trigger for MCS and can also be a standalone condition.
- Fragrances contain hundreds of chemicals, mostly petroleum-based VOCs, often undisclosed due to trade secrecy.
- Fragrance is found in thousands of consumer products, including those not labelled as scented.
🛡️ Managing Exposure
- Fragrance-Free Products: Label terms like “unscented,” “de-scented,” and “natural” can be misleading. Cross-contamination is common.
- Air Purifiers: Can help but have limitations. Choose models carefully based on chemical removal, noise, light, and air movement.
- Masks: Useful in public spaces. Options range from fabric masks with chemical filters to full respirators.
- Buying Goods: Online shopping may reduce exposure. Be cautious of scented packaging and reused boxes.
- Treatments: Some benefit from low-dose immunotherapy or isopathy.
- Explaining to Others: Communication can be difficult. Tact, preparation, and written support can help. Consider practical accommodations for visitors.
🏥 Health and Social Impact
- Fragrance exposure is linked to asthma, migraines, eczema, and other health issues.
- Surveys show public support for fragrance-free environments.
- Fragrance-free policies exist in parts of Canada and the U.S., often as accessibility measures.
- Fragrance Sensitivity is recognised as a disability in some countries.
- National Fragrance-Free Day is promoted annually in June by the Asthma & Allergy Foundation in Scotland.
