February 2025 Update on ME/CFS and Long COVID Initiatives
The UK Government discussed developments in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and long COVID care during February 2025. Key highlights include:
- Delivery Plan for ME/CFS: The final delivery plan aims to focus on boosting research, improving education, and bettering the lives of those affected. It is set to be published by March 2025, informed by prior consultations and stakeholder engagement. No additional funding is allocated for this plan.
- Employment Support: Initiatives like Access to Work grants, Disability Confident programs, and Jobcentre services are in place to help individuals with ME/CFS or long COVID reintegrate into the workforce.
- Research Investments: The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) remain committed to funding studies on ME/CFS and post-viral conditions, fostering collaboration across sectors.
- Local Services and Variability: NHS England advises Integrated Care Boards to tailor services for ME/CFS and long COVID based on local needs. Notably, NHS Surrey Heartlands discontinued dedicated long COVID services, instead directing patients to relevant existing services.
